Parque Natural La Cañada

On July 20, 1968, Grupo FRISA acquired ownership of approximately 109.87 hectares of forest located in the Magdalena Contreras borough of Mexico City. This land serves as a natural barrier against urban sprawl and is the gateway to approximately 2,800 hectares of forested area known as “Los Dinamos.”

Roughly 2.5 kilometers of the Magdalena River, the last living river in Mexico City, flow through this area. The Magdalena River spans a total of 21.6 kilometers and provides approximately 20 million cubic meters of water annually to the southwestern part of the city.

In terms of biodiversity, the area is home to at least:

90 distinct plant species
19 endemic species
2 species under protection category -NOM-059-SEMARNAT-201
67 bird species
37 mammal species within their distribution range
2 endemic reptile species in Mexico

In 2019, Grupo FRISA began executing the project known as "Parque Natural La Cañada" (PNLC) with the purpose of transforming the area into a natural space for environmental education, community engagement, and social interaction in the heart of Magdalena Contreras. The project includes commercial areas, public spaces, gathering spots, and ecotourism activities aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the forest and river ecosystem.

In 2024, Parque Natural La Cañada A.C. was authorized by the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT) to receive tax-deductible donations.

And now, in September 2025, the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources, through the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas, granted accreditation to Parque Natural La Cañada as a Voluntarily Designated Conservation Area (ADVC for its acronym in spanish).

2024–2025 Achievements

+80% of visitors come from the Magdalena Contreras borough, mostly from low-income households.
Creation of 90 direct jobs and up to 450 indirect jobs in 2024.
During Holy Week, the Park welcomed up to 40,000 visitors, generating an economic impact of approximately $2,000,000 MXN for local merchants and temporary businesses.
The Trout Fair attracted more than 30,000 people per edition, generating around $2,500,000 MXN annually for local families. Its reactivation is scheduled for 2027.
